The fog rolled in early that morning. A cold and pale sky stood out between the dense treetops, which were swaying gently in the breeze. I woke up and crawled from my den in the foliage, yawning with sheer exhaustion; I hadn't slept well the night before.

White fog obscured my surroundings and the world was eerily silent, as though not a single creature was alive and breathing anywhere. I could tell from the silence that I was alone. Alone as always.

I stretched my wings and took off, smashing through the tree branches until I was high up in the sky. The frozen air was calming. A few flakes of snow began to drift from the fog, landing and melting on my scales as I flew.

In the distance, concealed behind two mountain peaks, I spotted a lake. It was frozen, ice covering its surface, glittering like diamonds. But I could hear voices - distant voices coming from that pool of water, leading me onwards. Perhaps there was life existing after all. Perhaps I wasn't so alone.
