"That's why I have ears."

"But what if you go deaf in both ears?"
"Then my mane will have to be cut short, now won't it?"

"Can I help you if you have to?" her eagerness both flattered and unsettled me.

"Of course," I paused, "of course. If you want to go through this uncombed nest."

“It’s not that bad!”

Then she laughed and it sounded my own somewhat, but I merely dismissed it as me hearing something I 'wanted' to hear. Then there was quiet.

"Okay, last question, I promise!"

"Yes?" she honestly didn't have to promise.

"Why are we out here again? I keep forgetting."

"I'm just here to stretch my legs with a walk and you," I paused, "wanted to tag along."

"Oh yeah, sorry." she laughed sheepishly.

"No need to fret. Boss has worse memory than anyone; trust me." Walks like these were nice.
