I padded through the small, jolly village. Children ran about, playing gleefully. This small town was home to both humans and animals, and they both stayed in similar homes and had many of the same occupations.
My fur felt blissfully warm in the winter sunlight, and I closed my heterochromatic eyes and sighed contently. Mother Nature, a beautiful Indian woman wearing a dress made purely of golden feathers, brightened with gems and slivers of gold and silver. I dipped my head politely, bowing to the goddess. I distinctly remember her smiling warmly at me, before walking down the dirt road to greet the others. We were, after all, the only village on Earth that was hidden from technology and evil by a magic cloak surrounding our land.
This place was utopia.

Alas, things in our land had begun to change for the worst. Rumours had been spread that when night fell demons came out to feed. I always felt an odd chill down my spine whenever I overheard others speaking of it.
Snapping out of my own thoughts I remembered that one of the elders, a kind old grizzly bear, was taking the Nears, warriors, artisans, and shamans in training, on a journey through Glass Forest. I jumped to my paws and ran through the Bazaar, apologizing when I ran into anyone. I prayed that Nayami had waited for me.
My green tongue lolled out of my mouth as I picked up speed, running as fast as my legs could carry me toward the mouth of Glass Forest.
...

I arrived some time later, panting heavily, "I... made... it..." I said through gasps for air. Nayami chuckled lightly, and reached over and scratched behind my ear gently, "You silly child, you really must learn to pay attention to time."
"Hmph, yeah! She sure should, the dumb dog kept us waiting forever!" a ginger-haired girl snapped. Nayami shook her head and sighed, then fixed her jacket and turned toward the forest, "Alright, children, are you ready?" she said loudly, having a powerful voice for someone so old. My tail seemed to wag a mile a minute, and I barked in delight, "Y-yes ma'am!" I was very eager to go on the expedition, and the fellow Nears looked at me harshly, causing my spirits to drop a bit. Was this REALLY going to be as fun as I hoped? I longed for it to be worth while, but with these thistle-brains I doubted it'd be any fun. Sighing, I trotted behind the others, my tail dragging along beside my hind paws.

I remember hearing from my mentor, an old Asian-looking man, how he had explored the Glass Forest at my age. He had described it as the most beautiful place he had ever been to. He was correct, this place was GORGEOUS! The trees had fluorescent blue-green bark, and looked as if they were made of gems and glass. As I absorbed the glory of the wondrous forest, my eyes locked with a dark-haired human boy. My ears grew hot and I was forced to look away out of embarassment.
I had strong feelings toward the male, who was only several moons older then I. Many of you may think it is disturbing to imagine a human with an animal, but in our Queendom this is completely natural. Animals and humans have mated and reproduced, having humanoid offspring you Others now call 'anthros' and 'furries.' I often hear of stories of you dressing as them, and honestly, I find it quite amusing.
I gazed up at the noon sun, narrowing my sensitive eyes as I watched the blazing star.
My stomach suddenly began cramping harshly and I yelped, dropping onto the green grass. Nayami rushed over as my muscles tightened and my body began convulsing. The anthro grizzly did everything she could to help, and eventually calmed me down.
---

I gritted my teeth, *How had this happened? I was still pure!* Nayami had discovered I was pregnant with not one, but two children. This explained the vision I had recieved many moons ago. It was of two anthro wolves, both pure white. The male had jet black bangs that seemed very unkempt and fluffy. He had quite the attitude as well. The female seemed more mellow, and had light brown bangs rather then black.
I felt the urge to cry, but held onto the tears as well as I could.

Night had finally fallen, and had been gloomy all day since Nayami had told me the news.
"Hey, you okay?" a voice whispered to me. I looked over, then felt my ears grow warm again, "Um, y-yeah...." It was HIM. The brown haired human from before. His beautiful brown eyes gazed into my green and purple. "Really...? You don't seem like it..." he replied quietly, gently placing an arm around my furry, muscular body. Whimpering, I looked down, "N-no... I'm not... I just don't understand how this happened...."
His gaze softened, "Chemical," he knew my name, and I knew his as well, "Perhaps this is a gift from the Dinneheh of Fallen Stars. This must have been destined to hapoen," he muttered.
"You may be right, Jack..." I sighed, my lower canine teeth faintly glowing in the moonlight. I leaned against his warm body, whimpering as my body quaked with sobs.
---

We woke up the following morning to thhe calls of song birds. I was curled up beside Jack, my head gently resting upon his chest. Blinking my eyes I sat up and yawned, then licked my lips hungrily. Nayami had apparently gone fishing, and was currently cooking them. She seasoned them with herbs, like basil and rosemary. She smiled at me, wrinkles forming at the corners of her eyes. "G'morning love-birds," she chuckled as Jack woke up beside me.
Holding back a smile and feeling my ears grow warm, I walked over to the elder to help her with the cooking.

"Did you sleep well?" the grizzly asked me, handing a fish to a fellow Near. "Just fine, thank you for asking," I responded, dipping my head. "Hm, alright. Well, hurry and finish your breakfast so we may continue our journey."
I grasped a fish in my jaws and set to work on crunching through bones and tearing through scales. The juices splashing into my mouth were delicious, and I longed for more food, though I knew that on this journey we were to eat only what Nayami gave us.
The elder gathered the squad together, and told us we would be traveling out of Glass Forest today and into the Snake Fields.
*Snakes?* I thought. That was no big deal for me, since I had spent plenty of time around garden snakes. Little did I know, that these snakes were much more malicious then the docile snakes we were used to.

---

At around sunset we arrived in a large, barren field with several clusters of dry bushes. I sniffed the air, catching the scent of rotting flesh. Bile rose in the back of my throat, causing a burning sensation. Nayami, clutching the large branch she had found along the way, looked back at us. By the expression on her face, I knew that some of us would not survive this part of the quest.

I felt tension rise between our group. I made the decision to stay near Jack while we ventured through this Hell-like area. Nayami told us to go, and many of the Nears ran as quickly as they could across the field. I heard a poor doe squeal as a snake locked it's fangs into her leg.
Jack and I couldn't bare to watch, and we took our time walking through the field. Jack suddenly pushed me back as a moccassin slithered barely a yard in front of us. I held my breath until it was out of sight, then sighed in relief.
Jack gently urged me onward; we were half-way to the meeting point Nayami had as.signed, and we vowed to make it together.
I shut my eyes tightly as yet another Near collapsed from a snake bite.

---

The moon had began rising by the time the other Nears and I arrived at Nayami's meeting point. Many of us were still trembling with both fear and exhaustion.
The elder didn't say a word, only ushered us onward. We were now heading toward the Cliffs.

I whimpered, gritting my teeth as we climbed over the jagged rocks that were part of the cliffs. I glanced at Jack, his muscles rippled beneath his pale skin, and sweat dripped down his face. He glanced at me, smiling weakly; this test was proving much more difficult then I had previously assumed. I suddenly wished we were back in the village, and yelped as the rock broke beneath my hind paw. Luckily, Jack grabbed me by the extra skin on my neck and hauled me back up. We had finally reached the top of the cliffs. I was panting heavily, as were the others, and we all collapsed with exhaustion and slept until sunhigh the next day.

---

I woke up breathing heavily, my body drenched with sweat. My eyes were wide, and green saliva dripped from my mouth. I shook out my fur ad stood up, hoping that Nayami had gotten us food. My hopes were crushed when I saw she was only waking the others so we could continue our trek.
Slowly, we all trudged through the thick, slimy mud of the swamps surrounding Crystal Lake. I felt a burst of excitement: The journey was almost over! Then we would return to our village, where we would recieve our names. Tail wagging, I began wading through the green-brown sludge to get the the lake. Glancing back at Jack I grinned, feeling warm at the sight of his kind smile. He hurried to stay beside me, and we were the first to arrive at the Lake. Well, Nayami was there first, of course. We waited for the others to arrive before resting. Nayami allowed us to drink from the lake, which was said to give us the strength we needed to get back home.
I now understood how Nayami had the strength of a young bull.

Nayami allowed us two days of rest before we went home. Jack and I spent most of that time playing fetch and swimming, while the others slept. We were to leave at sun high, and weren't as excited as we had been to begin the journey. Nayami, however, had planned a different route on the way back home.
As sun high finally arrived, Nayami gathered us all together, and, without saying a word, set off on a narrow grassy path through the swamplands surrounding Crystal Lake.
This route was much easier to take then the way of which we had come. I stayed a ways ahead of the others, keeping beside Nayami and Jack. My tail wagged lightly as the many hours passed. Although it was nearly dusk, we had stayed on this same path all day, and it puzzled me.

---

It was moon high by the time we were back at the village, although from afar I could tell something was wrong. Smoke drifted through the air, and ash fell around us, causing us to sneeze. Nayami tried keeping us back, but I felt the need to go into the town. I HAD to find my mentor! In a single bound I was already far ahead of the others. I was moving as swiftly as I could possibly go, but stopped dead in my tracks in the opening of Glass Forest, where I saw my home town up in flames.
What had occured while we were gone?
