Oh yeah! For elite four/gym leader/random battles, you'll use any amount of pokemon (unless stated otherwise) but in tournaments you'll use 3 for singles and 2 for doubles.

When you compete in tournaments (psssh thats how you get chosen to be gym leader / elite four) you use 3 for singles & 2 for doubles, & if you are in a doubles tournament who are you with :o
