(In my story) Animals have no free will; they are bound absolutely by their natures and instincts. Nachash hates humanity for constantly choosing selfishness and evil.
I may be getting far too philosophical here, but ARE we really free? We know the consequences as we are still self- aware, but because of the way we were made, are forced time and time again to act in those ways... Only a few people are able to overcome the darkness that we were clearly intended for, and even then they are subject to the corrupted nature of the world.
^Pay no mind to my little rant. Your story's awesome just the way it is! (But it is something to consider...)
Mankind has been asking that question for centuries.
I'd say yes. Ultimately, whether or not a situation or thing has a large amount of power over you, you still have to choose to follow it. That's why Nachash hates humanity. Oh, yeah, more cookies to who can guess this guy's origin of design. Hint: Culture/people mentioned in the Bible, but was wiped out.
