and for some trivia in France there is a place called Isigny. in 1066 william the conquer sailed over from normandy. to get warriors he used press gangs who r guys who go into pubs and chuck drunk guys on boats and tell them to fight. during this time people were confused as no one had a surname. so they called them after the place they were born.
:D Love that movie! This was my favorite song out of all of them! I always actually thought the firebird was quite pretty. It doesn't represent anything bad, just a part of nature.
one of these guys (lets call him denis) became known as Denis Isigny coz he came from isigny. the normans beat england in the battle of hastings (* * * *) and denis isigny began to settle in. a short while later, william returns to france but denis isigny is married to an english woman and chooses to stay. over time the family name is confused and slowly changes. isigny probabley became disigny by mistake. at this stage we r several hundred years on and an english fleet have set out to discover america. a disigny descendant is among them. lets call him fred.
fred settles in in america and generations pass. the surname keeps changing. disigny becomes disiny. disiny becomes diseny. diseny becomes disney. more generations go by until one couple give birth to a son who they name Walter. and Walter Disney began his life
that is the etymology of the worlds most famous surname and it took me ages to write out here so plz dont just not take any of this in. i consider it very interesting.
one last interesting fact... ,,,, an extra name for someone like a surname is called an eek name. this term some how got confused and the n from an got moved to the front of eek name so u get a neek name which if ur clever u will realise is how the word a nickname came about. and this is wat linguistics is all about: etymology of words and names.
and if anyone here is canadian then ul probably know already what the etymology of canada is. wen the english explorers first arrived in Canada and found people living there already, the english asked them "where is this?" the canadians who didn't quite understand english thought they were asking what the group of huts were. they said their word for village, kanata. then it is confused for canata and then canada.
