Well I would say the same thing about fan art of characters in general, esp. Nintendo stuff, but that's not really the point of this... original characters get a heck of a lot less stars, and tbh the only fan art I've seen get that many likes has been legitimately well done :/

In the end, it's not about skill, it's about how recognizable your character is.. sooo....

I get that aswell. I may not be an amazing artist, but when a painting that I feel is quite good doesn't get many likes it makes me feel really bad.

Well, it is about skill too, just not as much as it should be. I honestly really appreciate the likes I get, but it bother me that my most popular painting (on my other account) is from Yoshi's Island and then it's Animal Crossing. Besides those, my OC art gets less even if I spend more time... which is why I try really hard not to do fan art unless it's for someone elses OC.

How this all works is a mysty to me. I've uploaded over 115 painting, most of which look realistic and the most likes I've ever gotten is three silver stars on a dare painting.

Though I think that liking a painting for the artist's sake is wrong, we have to accept that the actual quality of a painting hardly affects how many likes it gets. Jokes, themes, mature content, opinions and games tend to get you more attention. Which is why people are liking this painting because of the message rather than how well you've drawn Mario.

This isn't always the case. A lot of people who get their paintings into This Weeks Best and Top Rated are also very deserving and they do in fact work hard and spend hours on their artwork

I happen to see a lot of amazing artists that don't get as many likes as they deserve. Like, personally I see people on here with better art and styles than me, but I still get more likes and I'm like, "wut, c'mon guys". I still work hard on my drawings though, and so do a lot of popular artists. It's not like we're trying to get little doodles in weeks best or anything... a lot of us just wanna post our doodle-bobs cause we think they're funny or we're proud of them and we wanna share em' with you guys... but because they have so many followers they're like "aw dat's cute" and they like it and everyone else does too and arfgifrjn. I still feel bad for all of the wonderful, but unappreciated artists though... it really is unfair.

Sometimes when I click on a picture I feel like it gets TOO many likes(if it's by a popular artists). Now , I not saying that the pic is bad because I think it is , I'm saying if a famous Colors artist just quickly throws something together to say "I'm going on holiday" or whatever , it doesn't really need a ton of likes but it gets them even though said picture doesn't deserve them

I agree. Some artists are very underrated and deserves more likes. I really hate it when tracers who don't even trace good at all get in week's best, so freaking annoying! I'm not against tracing or anything, as long as it's well traced and not claimed as their own. Also, if an artist is popular, they can just upload a blank pic but still get many likes, so unfair!

I spend way more time on paintings now then I used to and I get no stars , which is incredably frustrating when you've spent like thirty to forty minutes on a pic

30-40 minutes isn't very much, no offence. :/ I spent more than 7 hours on one of my pics.

Still though. I drew a charlie brown pic over the holidays. I'd spent two weeks trying to make it as amazing as possible. What did I get? Four bronze stars...

I kinda feel that way, meh. :/

I havn't been on there for a while :/ but a lot of peeps on there really do take notice of ya art. I don't actually understand why it matters so much. I understand that websites like this inevitably end up becoming one big popularity contest, but the reason I use the gallery is because I like my art. I'm generally quite proud of my art. I just want to share it in the hopes that other people might like it too. As long as one or two people see my art and enjoy it, I don't think getting likes or followers matters. I wish more sites were about actually SHARING art instead of OMG LOOK AT ME LOVE ME PRAISE ME.

I spend 3-5 hours on something and rarely get like five-seven likes, usualy only 3. Then I just scribble out junk and get like 5 or ten wtf. Oh, and my most liked pic was a quick trace that shouldn't have got anything seeing as I stated it was traced, how about no. -_-

This is so, so true. The only thing I can do is keep on painting. I try not to be discouraged by low like counts--I enjoy painting, and that's the main thing that matters to me.

You are being too bounded to likes. Is your art only good compared to other people's art? Is "like" the only criteria? You people are confusing y'know? You wouldn't last one second in tumblr (considering "likes" are the only positive feedback) trying to expose your own art. Be grateful that here people are encouraged to try their best on their own. Yet, all you "professional drawers" do is whine that this is an open space for beginners.

I've never gotten 25 likes on any of my paintings and i'm good at drawing
