I can only really offer my own opinion. And it's a dissenting opinion it seems.

I really like the games. I had so much fun battling and capturing everyone. I spent months trying to complete my Pokedex, developing a team for tournament battles based on each of their strengths and weaknesses, and generally having fun by myself.
But that right there was the problem for me. Most of the gameplay was by myself. I couldn't go to any public tournaments, and online ones would feel like I was battling the A.I. not actual people.
Battling and trading with people was fine and all, but I wanted to really "play" with them. I wanted to travel and adventure with them. It would have been a much more involving game if they let us do more than just play minigames with people in realtime online. (Heartgold Soulsilver)

That's why the last version I ever played was my "precious" Pearl version. Now don't get me wrong, the later games are very cool because of all the new features like constant running (HG SS) video chat (Black White) and Mega Evolutions (X Y), but it's just not enough for me to want to play it anymore. Gamefreak has to start allowing us to play together, with our avatars interacting with each other in real time for me to even consider playing it again.

I realize that I sound real greedy with what I'm asking for and that there are very few who would share my opinoin. Nevertheless I thought really long and hard about how my thoughts had changed since I played my Blue version all those years ago.

Consider what you really want to get out of the game. All Pokemon games require a large investment of time and if you're ok with what it has to offer, then I'm sure you'll love it just the same. ^_^
