None of the Pokemon games are linked by story, meaning you don't have play the older games to understand X and Y. To answer your question, yes, you should buy one of them, It doesn't matter which one. No childhood is complete without playing a Pokemon game :P

well im getting y. because it seems like EVERYONE is going to get x... but yeah. start with the originals. or y or x, doesnt really matter. i started w/ ruby and emerald THEN played the others

Apparently, X and Y are the best pokemon games by far, so eventually you should get one of them! The two games are pretty much the same, besides having one of the two legendaries and each game having exclusive pokemon. My advice is to go on pokemon.com to see where the party's at :3

I'm getting X, you know why? Ha! X is great! With Mewtonite X, you get a psychic-fighting type Mewtwo, unlike Pokemon Y. And! You want Yveltal, the legendary of Pokemon Y? Ha again! Think again! Get X with Mega Charizard X, Mega Mewtwo X, and Xerneas with his/her Geomancy attack! You can get Yveltal just by trading! Don't you know? In my pokemon black... I got reshiram that my pokemon black gave me and got zekrom, the legendary of pokemon white, by trading! See? I even got 2 Kyurems by trading! So i recommend you to get Y...

OKAY FRIEND MY TIME HAS COME-
So basically XY has a bunch of stuff and features the old games didn't have so it might be a bit confusing so I recomend either Black and White for story, or Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald as an old game everyone has played/ loved. uvu
