Ugh, I struggle over backgrounds myself. Hmmm...usually I start by picking a color that contrasts with the main picture. In this case, maybe grays/silvers? Then I try to find a theme that won't overshadow the painting, like in this case maybe verticle diamon or sword shapes. Shading and darkness too? These are just suggestions.
