Actually, you can write (type?) up to 4 numbers. Once you exceed that number, every number typed will be censored. But if you write 4 or less numbers, you'll be fine!

It's the words IN the words that are censored. Sp.ic in spi.ce, gl.and in Engl.and, etc. Numbers aren't censored, but CHAINS of numbers are in order to prevent people from giving out their phone numbers (and possibly friend codes). Some words that don't make sense to block in English may actually be curse words in another, while ''minor swears'' like boo.ger are most likely part of a common blacklist the makers downloaded without bothering to edit.
They really do need to update and REFINE the blacklist, though. It's incredibly stupid...
