I may be art ignorant, but I think tracing is okay. It's been said that imitation is the highest form of flatery in art. Plus tracing is more difficult than it may seem and if your doing it in a different medium say 3D for others enjoyment whats wrong with that.

i agree with this, and unfortunately i traced one of my pictures. im not proud of what i did, but i was just doing it to test out the 3d on the drawing tools. ill do more drawings freehand and in the event that i do a trace, i will give all credits to the original artists, because people that do only tracings and give no credit to the original artists make real artists look bad. thank you for your time to read this and check out my pictures if you care to. the one that i traced was the one of viewtiful joe.

C'mon people im sure you all kno what it is to trace(if you dont its sad & you need to go back to elementary school). Using a certain style isn't tracing but if you trace over a picture that is tracing b/c you traced it! I don't trace(or at least i give credit if i do) and I don't like those who trace then take all of the credit. And I can draw pictures jumping around, if i don't jump around it won't come out right.

I have a huge gallery outside of colors gallery, that I made from scratch like characters from various comics made during my lonesome childhood but I don't mind tracers really I don't (cuz thats how I 1st started off) yeah it pi**es me off to see others get a sh*t load of stars for traced images and some of us who worked hard using our imaginations get nothing... but The way I see it, I just have to work harder at my own art, because traced or not it is still art (sure not theirs but art it still is)

Ah yes, this too. Raged when I saw this when I first joined here. Now I'm all passive about it, but not to a full extent. Just looking at the top paintings of the week makes me sick, but I guess they just add stars because of what the content in question is that's being traced. Ah well, you'll get used to it, I hope. It just comes down to a point to where you look for original, unnoticed and true artists out there. Hope your search for them is fruitful.

It's a universal style, open for anyone to alter to their liking. And 'adventure time' didnt make the style, like i said, they took another style and altered it to their liking. Nothing is completely original. I have always drawn in a cartoonish fashion, I saw a picture of the adventure time character with the white hat (fin i think?) and thought the way the artist drew his arms was neat, so i tested it out on this drawing. I took my style and altered it to my liking. I never traced or plagurized (sp?) anything, I simply pulled this drawing from my imagination and crafted it into this. So I would appreciate if you wouldn't resort to An Hominem. (:

Tracers have no right to get gold stars! I agree 100 precent! It may be harder to trace, but that doesn't mean its better. "It's harder to drive on ice, than on cement, so it's better." is basically what your saying. I don't give tracers stars. Ever. It ****** me off... *sobs in corner*

Its almost a slap in the face to us people whom try to draw original things we put many hours on, and we see like 4 of the same toon Link drawings that were traced poorly get even more recognition and fame, at least add a personal touch to drawings, spruce things up when you trace em, try out different ways to color instead of just eye dropping over the original drawings color. I know most of the site consists of younglings who have A.D.D. now, but sheesh, seeing a bunch of the same slutty Nintendo Princesses and toon Link/Zeldas that were poorly traced get all the recognition on the best of the week section while there's so many super amazing original drawings out there going unnoticed makes me not want to live on this planet anymore :|

OMG IKR?! some of my arts look traced... but they are legit, besides the team 4 star one cuz i needed to draw a krillin own just for the lolz

the worst thing is tracing work and then putting your own signature on it!!! even if you pretend to draw guide lines, most artists who make original art will be able to tell what you're doing. Give it up already and at least credit the work you're tracing. if you sign work that isnt yours you could be violating copyright laws. might be worth looking in to... its certainly against the rules of this application.

Within a few months, more of these rant paintings will spring up on This Week's Best because the problem has already generated to this within 6 weeks. Don't say you didn't see this coming... When some (insert 4-letter word here)-head decides to rage on my account about how an obviously UNtraced pic is a trace, I like to leave them there (unless they are rude, crude or vulgar). Why? So others can see how utterly ridiculous their claims are.

I absolutely can not stand people who trace then get top ratings like you said. Iseriously dont even know why they allow it there are many artists better then me and im not bad, but yet they have more stars then a real artist who worked their **** off ? Its not riight!

I think it depends on a couple of things. If you stole the most popular image on google images and traced over it, you suck. If you actually draw something in real life, snapshot it, then trace, or have drawn something on a computer, and transferred it tto your 3ds, then it's fine, because it's your original idea and art

the problem too is that there is so much new content all the time [a lot of which isnt good, or just people writing words/fc ect.] that all the good work gets lost in the mix since the browsing off of the 3ds is more limited [wish you could go to the next page on the new art for example].

The only time I truly think you should trace, but only if you seriously can't paint, is if you go out and take a real picture, not some meme or fan pic.

Most of the people who bought this game have the right to have fun, and if they like tracing then you can't stop them. They have as much right to publish a picture and anybody can like whatever they want to. I hate it when people try to control what you do on a game of yours when it's allowed. I only traced my Neku pictures (Everything else isn't) but tracers can trace if they want to. Games are for fun.

I haven't seen the Colors gallery since the first week it was released. I just noticed a number of traced works. I think it's just younger users that don't know it's against the gallery rules to upload traced works. Not to mention uploading friendcodes. xp

I´m a tracer, whats wrong with it? I do the 2D pictures into 3D Pics which is often good. Let the tracers trace and let the haters hate but dont do like a little child whose lolipos is stolen! I honestly don't see the fun in mind when it comes to tracing. I know that's more for the hobbyists, less serious artists out there, it seems. It's just because I'm more of the original artist, not the copy cat, that's why.

most of my art is done by me a couple are traced but always do my own background and colors. but my newest sokka i just traced the outside line of his head shape.

I completely agree. I don't mind if people DO trace, but they shouldn't get the ratings they are. I also don't like copying, the other form of tracing (in my opinion). Now, I think it's cool to do tracings of drawings you have done in real life, provided that you didn't copy/trace those ones. While some of these tracings/copies take some skill to transfer to 3D and make them look close to the original, they still don't deserve ALL the praise they usually get. Perhaps they should update colors with a category system. Like trace/copy, 2d, 3d, anime, etc. As well as age categories.

its nice to see more people saying where they got their traced images from recently! thats probably the best thing you can do because people like me like to see these great images/traces but i also want to see their other works to learn from them. and thats pretty much what the OP says in the description for this picture. maybe a better , less blunt message than 'stop giving stars to tracers' would be 'ask people nicely if they would credit the original artist' but its not quite so shock and awe XD

Tracing is for practice use only, if it was uploaded then its art theft/plaguerising.

sure us original artists put our works online, but its common sense for people to not trace our work, plus its common sense not to upload traces, if I want to look at traced artwork I'll look at the real thing instead.
Us artists have a respective code/set of rules to live by, so all in all, I agree with you.

I have no problem with some tracers, but I DO NOT support the tracers that take other people’s art without permission and trace them. And saying you “can't draw” is no excuse to copy other people’s art, and I don't care if it's for fun, I don’t even care if Colors! is “just a game”, I still think it’s stealing. I also felt like saying this and it about the angry tracers... Bashing someone who doesn't support tracing, telling him/her to delete the app (Which is Colors!) from his/her 3DS, iPhone or iPod touch and saying he/she should get banned from Colors! because of it doesn’t really solve anything. I understand your frustration, and it upsets me a bit too, but around here there really are some people who still put effort into a drawing, even if it was traced. Also, most tracers are doing it for practice. While it would be more effective using hand-eye coordination, tracing still helps a little. Heck, if I never traced when I was younger, I wouldn't be where I'm at today! (Gimme a Woot if you were here once too! :D) So before you frown upon it, think about why they're doing. Stars don't give any privleges here, so I could honestly care less about them. It just shows how people have 'liked' it, really. Just my little two cents. :/

Traces drawings generally take a moderate amount of skill to color and shade. sometimes thats the main thing people recognize as GOOD in the artwork and 'like' it. That's just my opinion

This argument is stupid. everyone who traces is all like "I only trace some stuff" and everybody that's made a bunch of original paintings with no likes say, "Colors should get rid of tracings." I think that if somebody sees a random manga girl, or maybe a drawing of a cookie on the new pics, they're more likely to click on someone they know and love, like Mario or Link.

there are alot of kids who use C3d i'm sure. i dont condemn them for copying if it helps them develope there technique. as another pointed out, it's not a competition.
maybe a rational compromise would be to state if a work was copied in the description and state the original artist.

Quite the debate going on here. It would be nice if there was a system in place for the artist to indicate if their work is original or not. As it stands, personally, I give credit if I'm referencing someone else's work, and I "like" those who do the same. I don't see anything inherently wrong with converting a 2D image to 3D, even if so-called "tracing" is involved.

I don't blame people for tracing, cuz it's probably fun and they want to show ppl their handiwork, but I get annoyed when I like a photo because it seems very original and inventive, and proud that it was made on a 3DS, only to find out later that it wasn't. You should always say whether it is traced or not.

I see nothing wrong with tracing, it's there for those who can't draw as well as others. I copy images off the internet, well more like follow them to draw it, call it tracing if you wish, but I ultimately lack any imagination so I use images off the internet to follow to make a painting.

Unfortunately, this was to be expected. I knew the minute I downloaded this app, there would be traced works all over the popular pages. What makes it even more depressing is it's all anime, mostly. Moreover, what of all the inappropriate works on here? Camel toes and busty women all throughout. Why aren't the moderators catching up? I'm not surprised this sometimes slips through, but for it to be so frequent is just sad, especially considering how kid-friendly Nintendo likes to make itself look. I could go on, but I'll leave at that.

Ive yet to be explained to how you trace anyway. When i was a kid it was when you put a piece of paper over an image and copied an image onto it. Im guessing tracing does = copying, in which, GET OVER IT! EVERYTHING you have learned has been copied in some way. As a child you learn to talk and walk by copying, and people are learning to shade propperly by copying, so why the hate? If theyre copying someones work, they think its a good idea, so really its a complement. Stop being whiny little kids already.

anyone can draw from reference, but it just takes a while to get it perfect. tracing just makes it faster and doesn't WASTE all of your undo's. I only trace stuff that i'd be capable of drawing using the piece as reference. Tracing does help you learn the form of what ever you are trying to draw, but when people overdo it and credit themselves for making the picture, they become b*tches and noobs.

Although tracing without giving credit is wrong, its just for fun, its not like they are going to sponser our art on tv or something... because then the tracers could get sued. But if you dont like tracers, dont pay attention to them. But honestly, no offence, I think you made this little picture out of jealousy. Although actual drawers should get more attention and likes and comments than tracers, youre mad that you dont get as much feedback as tracers do. I honestly don't see anything wrong with tracing. I trace, myself, honestly because I was held back from school for a few years with no money. And, plus I wanted to try and work on my anatomy skills, and I believe tracing can help. The best thing to do is NOT what that artwork says-- Just tell the tracer a few words of advice and encouragement, because honestly, it's people like THIS that cause others to give up.

I think that anyone is allowed to star anything they want, what I do, is if I trace (mostly if I'm trying to draw a face) I try to be up-front about it so people know it's not original. but still, there are no rules in art! but I get where you're coming from, everyones entitled to have an opinion :)

Correct me if im wrong, but im preeeeetty sure tracing copyrighted material (i.e. Legend of zelda, official Nintendo art and or other art from known games or cartoons) is to some degree, illegal. those of you who try to justify tracing as "fun", will sadly never know how awesome it feels to draw your own painting without crappy training wheels. When i was in the 4th grade till i forget when, I used to trace all the time, till around sometime in Jr. High I tried to draw Freehanded instead, and from there I just went off on my own, I aint the best, but I am mediocrely good, still learning new things everyday :D. If you wanna give your likes to these traced drawings, go ahead, its your favorites list to have, but when you praise these guys with your "lol omgzorz you draw sooo good lololrofl check out mah galleries!!1!", just know youre enjoying something a REAL artist spent hours making before it was butchered by some attention seeking tween here on colors. Couldn't agree more. There are some incredible artists on here and the playback feature makes it a great place to observe people at work. Since the 3DS release its just turned into a minutiae of crap. It would be nice to have a list of users who tend to post interesting work, so you could just check their recent posts rather than wading through a bunch of sketchily redrawn Zelda promo pictures.

i dont exactly trace. i am working on one where i copied a bad painting, made it better, sended it to my sd card, sended it back to colors, and am tracing the improved version.

Tbh, I don't care about people who trace. Painting is what, drawing everything we 'see', ether a picture or even something in front of you? I'm an amateur artist who takes time in everything when it comes to drawing, whether it's creating in my mind or tracing. Artists who trace imo, shouldn't feel bad, sometimes it's their way of expressing their artistic skills. Doing a pic handmade and doing it with a software is 2 VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. Not every artist has a clear mind of what they're going to draw. And tbh, tracing can help with that. I know I started with tracing pics when I was a kid and now I can 'see' what I'm gonna draw in my head. XD The only problem this site has, is the fact that traced pictues overshadows all other pics, which hurts creativity.

And Colors3d has the tracing tool so you can upload sketchbook pictures and trace them and upload them. Not so you can trace another artists work and claim as your own. Tracing pics from your 3DS Camera is good to practise. To be honest, I did this with two or three pics, just that other ones see my gallery. My one ones I find btw better. So it f*cks me off too, the some of the best ones just cheated. Please Check out my Angel. n,n

Carefully watch the playback(they don't draw guide lines to start off), look at their gallery if they have works that are lower quality than the traced one(s), mostly they steal commonly right off of google images, deviantart, and any other image or art hosting website so you should do a quick search there of the object being traced. You may notify the original author if the tracer claims it as their own under certain copyright issues. Follow this and you'll definatly know if it's traced or not.

The playback feature is a great tool in colors 3d. The ability to trace is not. There are so many good artists with so little recognition that it really is sad. I wish there was a separate ratings system like 1to 4 stars. There should be a way to view the images based on quality of work rather than quantity of stars.

I guess I'm alone on this, but let tracers trace. Its not like you can tell them to not trace. When I liked to draw superheroes, when I was 10 I traced to get the hang of it. People who trace just need practice and thats how they do it. Stop trying to exploit every tiny flaw people have.

Tracing is fine. if the non-tracers drawings are better, they'll get more stars. but regardless, tracing adds quality to otherwise terrible drawing. And some people trace off of pictures they themselves took!

Some people aren't that good at drawing, but tracing helps them get better. So stop whining at these people who are only trying to improve their skills. I'm sure you once traced and copied things too!

Tracing can be good to learn the basics. Then step by step move over to reference and then free hand.

We know it's good for basics but that's not what we're pointing at, it's what people do with the traced artwork afterwards that concerns us.

Ok no. Tracing is not good to learn basics. No art teacher or artist would ever say that. It handicaps you and impares your ability to grow as an artist. I draw, make tons of mistakes, erase and try again. The difficulty is part of the process so when tracing, not only are you stealing someone else's hard work you are crippling yourself if you want to be a better artist.

And yet I'm saying it, alright then I'll correct myself, it gives you a feel of how you're supposed to draw this, or that, no exp gained, just a taste of what it's like, and it's ONLY stealing if you're taking credit of it, there, the guy above me has learned something new.

Alright, I'll give you the no EXP gained argument. Still, I am now cynical when I see any good manga/cartoon art without pressing the playback. It has ruined the integrity of honest 2d art.

I think there's a certain line that cant be crossed. its one thing to trace lineart and change coloring AND to give credit for your reference, but its another thing to copy a picture completely and refuse to admit its not yours. I only use other pictures as a reference and i dont even trace them... even when i do that i let people know that references were used.

samboplusbluey has it right. Tracers should just ALWAYS credit or say the original artwork isn't theirs. But truly..it'd be nice to see more uniqueness and originality around this app. Just my opinion.

I can't believe this is even an arguement. Look, everyone paid money for this application. If some people want to trace...guess what, it's a function in the app. They're entitled to do as they please with the program as long as their actions are within the perameters of the end-liscense agreement or rules there-in. Imagine you bought a car, and you wanted to modify it (nitros, rims, ect.) and because some other group of people are strictly pro-stock and nonmodification, that you could't enter into any car show without a full stock vehicle, even though you've paid an admission fee beforehand. Thats ridiculous.
I understand that original artists deserve credit, but seriously, who comes onto Colors! to make money? The answer: No one. As long as "likes" have no actual real-world value, tracing doesn't hurt anyone. And did you ever stop to think that even though something was traced, that the person behind the stylus is still proud of it. Work is still work, even if its beginner level instead of advanced. Quit acting like you people were pushed out of your mother's uterus with a golden pen and master artwork in your hands. Tracing can help beginners learn, as someone has already stated. Who are you to deny them the joy of creating, learning, and fun?

Look. Most of the "art thefts" are traces of common anime/game/cartoon figures. This thing is, they're not trying to copy a Rembrandt painting and sell it for billions. I think the problem in this ordeal is really that the people complaining of art theft just have delusions of grandeur. I've only got three works up right now, and if someone re-uploaded any of it elsewhere, why should I care? I don't draw to have some part of my ego stroked. I draw because it makes me happy. It's nice to get recognition for good work, but ultimately, if you're only doing it for that you should quit. You may make brilliant paintings, but you rot and spoil that brilliance by squabbling over something so trivial in the end.

The way I get used to new styles is by using one reference painting then keeping the painting I made using that reference so that I'll remember how I drew it. And usually my referenced drawings don't look AT ALL like the picture I used as reference because all I usually use a reference for is so that I can get the hang of that style. And don't say that there isn't more than one style of anime because I can assure you, THERE IS. So yea, if you trace just to practice a drawing style so you can put it on the gallery, do what I do and use a reference instead. My argument is perfectly valid, no? ^.^

Totally true dude! I'm glad I can actually draw, cause i can't trace worth a **** (tried, failed) .I reference (usually for fan art), but it's mostly to refresh my memory (and i rarely do that). @Midna if you think Panda is right then you have NO right to call yourself an artist, That feature is NOT there to trace peoples artwork, because it's straight up ART THEFT, it's for importing your PHOTOS, it's not simple tracing anymore, tracing is for practice, not something to be proud of or to be official, They can trace, sure, but you DON'T upload it, because as it's stated, it's Art Theft, try that sh!t on other places you'd be screwed. So stfu. We're not angry at tracers now, we're p!seed at art thieves, we have plenty here.

It is true. I have been drawing for years! but with 3ds it is something new for me. I am more of the laid back old fashion Japanese ballpointpen, pencil, colored pencils, marker -- well. You get the idea. He he. :) To the point. Any beginner may try to attempt to draw on their own but 80-90 percent of the time they will trace. It is natural because it will help them recognize the lining and detail more often that in the future it will help them become great artists! :) But guys, please, just be sure that you let others know it is trace and to give the original artist credit as well. You get credit over traced drawings not because its cool, but because of effort and learning. So Artists who do and dont trace, please don't look down upon tracers because overall they are beginners learning. You should support these young minds and it will help encourage them to get better. And I bet even great artists trace as well from time to time but do not admit it, but so often we go with the flow. We may not even trace like we use to, but if so it is because we must of ran into an art style that is different for us so it enables us to keep learning as well. :D Peace out.

I agree that tracers that don't give credit are scum, but if you give credit then it's not so bad. There are people out there that can't draw and we were giving the option to trace for a reason. If I ever trace it's usually for practice and I give credit.

It really depends on what is traced, If you trace a pokemon or mario that's fine, but if you trace sombody elses work on Colors! 3D then you should not get stars.

It's not the stars, it's the fact that they are STEALING artwork. I would be beyond furiated if someone stole my work, and I know you would be too. tracers are of a bother. reading these comments make me think that all of 'em are around ten to eleven years old. eh. anyway. tracing does not make your skills better. practise does. so to all of you tracers; pick up a pencil and draw, don't trace.

i trace now. i have some stuff i did that took me days to do, and that stuff barely gets noticed! i gave up doing original stuff, not worth the time and effort anymore. i thank the tracers for totally ruining it for me :( so heck with it, im tracing from now on, and i say in the comments 'credit goes to the original artist'. i have never seen my real art make it in this weeks best or in the top.

I think that tracing is good- especially when you're just starting drawing- because it helps you to familiarize yourself with arm positions etc. However, use the tracing to learn or trace the outline of something and do your own colours and backgrounds (if you're drawing a person) instead of just tracing for the sake of it. And guys, don't stress out about it because tracing is an important part of drawing. Sorry, long comment...

So, if you're all upset with art theives, why keep calling them tracers instead of just art thieves? All art thieves may be tracers, but certainly not all tracers could be art thieves. Also, I'd like to point out the negativity and stigma on tracing is profoundly arrogant, Im the greatest artist by no means, but I got to the little level of a somewhat descernable artist by practicing, and that usually entailed tracing. If you were to look in any drawing book for the last fifty years, you'd see encouragement to trace. Familiarizing you'r musculature with the fine strokes of a brush or pen help in the creative process. If you're upset at art thieves, revise this picture. Otherwise admit that you weren't worried about that in the first place and were bummed you weren't winning the popularity contest. Though I agree that some tracers are just out for stars or what-have-you, the people actually practicing deserve recognition for their advancement and interest to become better. The issue is that you can't tell the two apart. I suppose giving credit where it's due is a solid point on the counter argument, but what if they just snapped a photo and went off to draw, never paying mind to the artist's name at all?

@Anonthrasher, you'll see those that actually improve on drawing then those who don't. And most of the time, those who never traced in their lives are those who won't improve on drawing. XD I completely agree with you, if you couldn't tell.

thats kind of a dumb thing to say though, those who dont trace never improve? If anything its completely the opposite. Just look at any artist on here whos defending tracing, check their gallery, i bet you 70 percent of the time they have traced drawings, some of them also have non traced drawings, and those drawings are all bleh looking, so wheres the improvement there? the main problem with this site is we have real artists looking for recognition, and attention seekers tracing to get stars only, overshadowing the people with either real talent, or who actually wish to improve and someday be real artists.

i totally agree with you. none of my drawings are traced.. and I used to adore some people in here for their incredible work.. but now that Colors!3D let us know who imported pictures before drawing, I discovered that most of those people are tracers. So sad.
