Because Metroid & Kid Icarus first came out together, they were considered sister series, with their first two games being released at the same time together. They share the metroid as an inside joke between developers. Only Metroid continued on through Super Metroid while Kid Icarus squandered in obscurity until Brawl revived interest in the character. Fun Fact: the name given to metroids in the Kid Icarus series is actually Japanese for "baby metroid."
