Did great the first race (that I raced in) terrible in the second. Probably due to the fact that Metal Mario is my main, so racing as Mii didn't help.

RZ: Well yeah, MK becomes skill based when there are no items. Also, pro or not, items can still hit you and make you fall behind. If you manage to get far ahead, there's less of a chance of that happening. MK is a mix of luck and skill.
