hmm... He could have escaped the fire by:
one, running the opposite way as ruby
two, melting into the shadows with his power or
three, being half burnt into shadows...
I wouldn't suggest three but all of those are possibilties to relate him to ruby, names could be
Shadow, Stealth, Dark Claw... etc.
Age should be more or less teen. Hope this helps :)
