I think that the Bubonic Plague had a role in ingraining the "Grim Reaper" image into people's heads when thinking of the concept. I recall that Middle Age artists and scribes antropomorphisised the deadly plague into the image of a cloaked skeleton figure, and henceforward people associated the two concepts with each other.
Death's scythe, is in fact, a pen. And a lance, as well as a rocket launcher, and a calculator, and a trombone, fort, statue, book, piano, t-rex, baseball bat, sudocube, UGLY DOG, jet plane, tiki head, fancy santa, teaspoon, and an atomic bomb.

I think of Death from Problem Sleuth. He's a nice guy.
"Death offers you some tea."
