well father away shots are alot easier 3d than close ups like this what i do is i think of what i wanna put infront middle and back.. (side view) after ive done that usually it's one arm and one leg on the top layer or just one arm and a few effects of accesories so i draw the entire arm's outline and i fill it in using another layer under it middle layer is usually the torso, head, and legs(both) and even though the arm is covering up some parts i still draw the entire thing and same goes with the third draw the entire other arm and then you have 2 layers left for your bg.

main lesson front draw all that goes there middle all that goes there back all that goes there.
this painting would be mask/visor front face and head top would go in the middle. ear things in the back and body as well and then just adjust it a bit by adding some (skin tone) on the top layer above the cheeks so it looks abit like the cheeks are a bit more forward (the brust under the solid one) then just make some more adjustments and there. 3D at about 1/4th is ok for that other 2 layers are free for anything else.

well you do the outline ("line art") on one layer thats ontop and uses a below layer to color in then you merge the 2 layers so you get one colored outlined layer but thats only if your to lazy to deal with the outline while coloring in it does make it easier though and really dosent have much to do with the 3d. its just something that makes stuff easier and you see that techniqe alot here if you watch the playback on alot of people's arts, even my own.

well if you have a good understanding of a how a 3-D world works and were things are and how they are. like a cube could be a pentagon from a certain angle but thats kinda to worded way of explaining.

and i have exp with photoshop inchworm animation and flipnote studio so layers werent to hard to get for me.

something that's pretty important to mention that i don't think you would have an issue with when 2 layers hold the same color (no shading or color diffs) say you drew 2 circles and there both ontop of eachother, niether will apear to be 3d. but i'm guesing you've run into that. simplest way is by addding some shading to the edge well thats one way.

best way is to just keep trying different things and experiment with the layers, learn what does what when you do things. thats the best way
