The station wagon is an isolated system. The characters are the energy in that system. No energy is entering or leaving the system. The energy constantly flows from being concentrated to being dispersed: wasted and useless. New energy cannot be created and high-grade energy is being destroyed. In this isolated system, the entropy can only increase. Therefore, I propose the story be called "The 2nd Law" or "Unsustainable". (sorry, been listening to a lot of Muse)
