Yes, to get the herobrine totem you need a mod.

stack two blocks of gold on top of each other. Stack a Herobrine totem on top of the two pieces of gold block. Then put netherrack on top. Light the netherrack on fire. Herobrines face is on the herobrine totem. His eyes will turn red. Herobrine will talk to you. He will say, you dont know what you did.
