For rocks, try lighter shades up top and darker shades at the bottom, then add little specs. This adds the illussion of light and shadow to the rocks as well as texture.
It does not look that bad! you actually did an interesting job with the 3D. Use the eraser to clean up the colors after you are done with each layer, that will help with the details!
