They are suppose to be up against the body nearly hidden so thats why they are barely noticeable.

Haha! This is something I'd never even thought of! :D
To answer your question, I don't have the island yet. The game starts out small and things unlock as you do things like raise your popularity, pay off your house, buy things, do other activities, etc. Some things are time sensitive too. For example, no matter how many trees I plant, I still have to wait 10 days after starting the game before I can unlock the garden store and buy an axe.
