Arael was mentally and physically abused by his father when he was 12. He got schizophren, later he developed a second personality. When he finally became a devil, Arael was granted the wish that he could sleep while his other self, Azrael, would be awake. Arael never got to know the pain of hell. Azrael did.

And there´s a whole big story behind all the archdevils/angels, I stated to write it down once, but never got over the first chapter. Plus it´s in german ._.
