So, before Cloud was a SOLDIER, and before Sephiroth was a bad boi, Zack met Aerith in an old, abandoned church, in the Sector 7 slums, in Midgar. Aerith grew flowers there, you see. Zack then tried to ask her to go out on a date with him, but she declined. Later, she asked him to go out with him. They date for around 3-4 years I think, cant remember, then in the span of those years, everything starts going south. Genesis and Angeal lose it, Genesis causes trouble for Sephiroth and Zack, They hunt Genesis and Angeal down, Sephiroth loses it, Cloud finally steps up, and has to impale Sephiroth. Sephiroth disappears, and Zack and Cloud get experimented on by Shinra. Z&C then run away. Cloud goes into a deep coma, leaving everything to Zack. Then...Zack has to face thousands of highly trained SOLDIERS, ALONE. He...doesnt pull through, leaving Cloud is legacy, and sword. During this time, Aerith had tried to get in touch with Zack, but she finally figured out he had died.

Fast forward about three years, and Cloud meets her in Sector 7. (Keep in mind, Cloud didnt know Aerith) Aerith then has Cloud become her bodyguard, him, of course, being grumpy about it. They try to stop Sephiroth multiple times, but fail. Once, Cloud had a joint dream with Aerith. They talk, and Cloud confesses his love to her. Aerith gently tells him, that she still loved Zack, and that they shouldnt be together. Cloud says, and I quote, "Don't I get a say in this?" But then they woke up. After some time of helping Cloud, some incidents happen, and they wind up in the Forgotten Forest. Um...Well...Aerith dies...Sephiroth uses Hell's Gate on her, impaling her through the stomache. He flys off, and Cloud starts to freak out. He wails, then crys over her. Later on, He takes her to a lake, and lets her sink to the bottem. Aerith became reunited with Zack, at last. Cloud sees Zack and Aerith in the same church in the Sector 7 slums. Aerith smiles at him, and tells him, in short, how proud she is of him. Then her and Zack disappear.
Thats not everything, but its the jist of it. She has a sad story...
