I never really romanced or befriended Gil, being more interested in Wizard, the doc, and whats-her-name with the blue braids, so I never really knew he had a sad story... Well, aside from the whole implied ''new guy in town stole my destiny'' thing...

No, Gill's is definitely the saddest. Gill really loved his mom. She would knit stuff and other things (I can't remember) When he was young, his mother got sick and died. His father became depressed and never came out his room because he was sulking. This left Gill to take care of himself and his father. He learned to cook by himself. He helped to bring his father out of depression. He hid his mother's picture in the fireplace. They didn't light the fireplace, so it was still there.
This is ALL CANON, I remind you, on the Japanese official website.
Sure, Neil's mother who was an actual character (I can't remember who) died and he doesn't like his dad, and Vaughn just doesn't have a family I think, but gosh, that's really sad.
