I was actually thinking of a story about how hippogriffs came to exist. About a king who falls in love with Pegasus's descendant whom he captured when he was a young adult while being married to his cruel queen. Mating with horses is taboo for gryphons, as horses are prey, but she becomes a pampered servant who doesn't have to work. They have a love child, as a hippogryph with the front paws of a lion, like him (a royal mark of a sort) so they send the mother and son to a rural village and cover up his feet so nobody will notice the deformity. When he grows up, he goes on an adventure to find his father with a minoan gryphon and an exotic gryphon
